Book Reviews

We will be reviewing books about food from fun recipes for children to luxurious books by Michelin-starred chefs. Most recently we have been looking at the work of Leeds-based publishers, Face Publications.

We feel we have to own up here.  We  are incredibly proud to be associated with this publishing company, as it is led by a very talented young designer and publisher, Anthony Hodgson, who just happens to be Astrid’s son (he believes being surrounded by her thousands of cookbooks in his youth seeped into his consciousness).

Anthony’s cookbooks are not ordinary cookbooks, they are beautifully designed works of art, but the design doesn’t outway the content.  Beautifully written, full of humour, heartwarming stories and masses of information and recipes to suit all tastes.

Don’t just take our word for it, see for yourself.  Click to buy their latest stunning cookbook: “Loose Birds and Game”.  Loose Birds is a follow-up to “Black Pudding & Foie Gras”, the winner of many awards, including the Best UK Chef Book, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, Paris. Both books are brilliantly written by chef Andrew Pern, of The Star Inn, Harome, North Yorkshire, and are a joy to read.  For a chef awarded a Michelin Star year after year,  Andrew is incredibly generous in sharing his culinary secrets with us, his readers.

“It really is a life’s work, a mixture of autobiography and a great reflection of the very best that Yorkshire has to offer the world of gastronomy’.

Michel Roux

“This is a must-have coffee table book which not only looks good with the chocolate brown suede cover, is also great to cook from. Andrew Pern is one of Britain’s leading chefs. He has held a Michelin Star for several years at The Star Inn in North Yorkshire. Not all great chefs can also write, but this one can! The book reads like a conversation curled up by the log fire; full of warmth, humour and humility and inspirational recipes. Like his cooking, the book is set to be a classic in its own right and one to enjoy for a long time to come”

Both the above books are sitting in pride of place on our cookbook shelves.  But we look forward to the next one out from Face Publications, due in September, “On The Menu”, by proprietor and head chef, James Mackenzie, of The Pipe and Glass Inn, the first gastro-pub/restaurant in East Yorkshire to achieve Michelin Star status in January 2010 and again in 2011.  A review will be forthcoming in due course.
